Gammon Construction supports digital transformation push with Veeam technology

Hong Kong-based Gammon Construction, one of Asia’s premier construction groups, has selected Veeam Availability Suite and Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 to safeguard critical data.

As an industry trailblazer, Gammon has been pioneering new operational models in its drive to be digital. Speed and seamless collaboration are critical enablers of this with more than 4,000 Gammon employees across the region actively collaborating in the cloud, further spurred by increased remote working from COVID-19.

With data growth surging, it was clear that critical data and business continuity were at risk as the native backup of Microsoft Office 365 (O365) could not guarantee that the data would be 100% restored during disaster recovery. In addition, its backup tools at the time would have required days or weeks for a full backup and restore.

Gammon required a more comprehensive data protection strategy and subsequently adopted Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 to optimise data backup and recovery speeds while enabling a 100% data restore guarantee. With the current ability to do daily backups of over 500 TB of O365 data with data restore and retrieval within hours, Gammon is pushing ahead on its digital transformation with confidence and enabling an always-on operating model.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft O365 complements Gammon’s use of the Veeam Availability Suite for backup and recovery, which has raised IT efficiency levels and improved Gammon’s productivity by helping engineering teams quickly retrieve historical data. In the past, the IT team needed at least five days to restore an entire data set from tape archives. Veeam’s file-level restores has made it easy to search for and restore a single file in the database, shortening each restore process to just a few hours.

Gammon is an early adopter of building information management (BIM) technology, which supports its ambition is to digitally integrate the full construction value chain from planning and design to construction, maintenance and more. With BIM, various stakeholders can view 3D models of physical projects on a common platform. Huge data volumes are now generated from each construction project with a single BIM model going over 100 MB, with some even reaching 1 GB. Managing data growth at this scale requires a more structured approach to protect critical information assets.

Veeam released version 5 of Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 in December 2020. Version 5 added purpose-built backup and recovery for Microsoft Teams, making it easier for users to quickly find and restore Teams data, including entire groups, specific channels and settings.

According to Veeam's fiscal year 2020 results, Veeam’s fastest growing product for the past two years has been Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 which saw 73% growth year-on-year and has been downloaded by more than 154,000 organisations, representing over 15 million user mailboxes. Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 protects Office 365 data, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, and now backup and recovery specifically built for Microsoft Teams.

AWS: AI adoption grows 20% in Singapore

Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon.com company, has found* that AI adoption continues to accelerate in Singapore. In the past year alone, 27,000 1 Singapore businesses adopted AI for the first time—equivalent to over three new adopters every hour. In sum, nearly 170,000 (48%) of businesses in Singapore have adopted AI 2 , up from approximately 143,000 (40%) a year ago. This represents a 20% year-over-year growth rate, AWS said. AI adoption is the strongest in the financial services industry (71%), followed by the technology sector ( software developers, data analytics firms, cloud service providers, and digital startups) at 70%, and healthcare at 63%.
