Lenovo introduces first-of-its-kind workstation: the ThinkStation P620

Lenovo has designed and built its new ThinkStation P620 to be the most versatile workstation on the market, removing the bottlenecks to allow performance to scale and user productivity to soar. As the first and only professional workstation powered by AMD’s brand-new Ryzen Threadripper PRO processor, the new workstation brings together unprecedented levels of power, performance and flexibility in a single socket CPU platform, Lenovo said.

Combining the power of AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper PRO processor with a fully-customised and scalable chassis, the ThinkStation P620 has reimagined the traditional workstation, finetuned for multithreaded applications.

“Our customers rely on us to deliver professional-grade solutions that are powerful, but nimble enough to be customised as their needs change and evolve,” said Rob Herman, GM, Workstation and Client AI Business Unit, Lenovo.

“One of the challenges for IT departments we’ve seen is the push to try new technologies before they’ve been vetted - lacking enterprise-grade features, certifications and security, and support. We’ve worked closely with AMD, ensuring the ThinkStation P620 removes all these barriers and gives users the support they need. Built on AMD’s versatile and extremely scalable Ryzen Threadripper PRO Processor, there are no limits to what can be accomplished.”

Now users can achieve seamless 8K streaming in real-time, reduced render times, ultra-fast simulation solving, quick assembly rebuilds and smooth interactivity with 3D assets, all without having to scale to a dual-socket system. 3D artists and game developers have a single machine on which to create, edit and build the media and entertainment experiences of the future. Those working across architecture and engineering can design, simulate and visualise products more efficiently. Those working in artificial intelligence and virtual reality can now take advantage of the ThinkStation P620 too.

“There are multiple stages involved when it comes to building Unreal Engine, cooking content for our games, and powering applications in media and entertainment,” said Pat Swanson, IT engineer at Epic Games.

“Previously, we always had to choose between either high core count or high clock speed. The Lenovo ThinkStation P620 powered by AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper PRO Processor is optimised for both aspects in a way that previous HEDT CPUs never quite were. It provides groundbreaking performance for everything from professional visualisation and simulation to compiling and building for game development, whether the team is working from home or in the office.” HEDT stands for high-end desktop computing.

Lenovo is delivering the only 64-core workstation platform – a new industry standard. AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO processors offer clock speeds up to 4.0 GHz, 128 lanes of PCIe 4.0 bandwidth as well as eight-channel memory support. In addition to the speed and flexibility, Lenovo customers now have unmatched core counts for multithreaded workloads in a single-socket platform – numbers that rival competing dual-socket solutions. Prior to today, traditionally the max core count that a single-CPU system could handle was 18 cores, while the highest number of cores that a dual-processor system could support was 56.

Further, the ThinkStation P620 delivers flexible GPU configurations, faster memory, quicker storage transfer speeds, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet built-in. This includes support for up to two NVIDIA Quadro RTX 8000 or four RTX 4000 graphics cards, up to 1 TB of memory and 20 TB of storage. This system is also the first and only PCIe Gen 4 workstation available today. Gen 4 PCIe offers twice the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0.

While the advanced design of the processor also brings increased thermal requirements, Lenovo and AMD collaborated to create a custom-designed heat sink that leverages a unique air-cooled solution.

Lenovo’s ThinkStation Diagnostics 2.0, ThinkShield support, upgrades to Premier Support and a three-year warranty deliver peace of mind. In addition, AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO desktop processors offer security features at the silicon level, allowing users to better guard their important data. This includes AMD Secure Processor, validating code before it is executed to help ensure data and application integrity, as well as AMD Memory Guard which enables full memory encryption to help protect sensitive data against advanced physical attacks should a PC be lost or stolen.

The news follows a June announcement of the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR860 V2 and SR850 V2 servers, which feature 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors and support for enhanced Intel Deep Learning Boost for data-intensive workloads.

When combined with Lenovo DB fibre channel switches, the servers enable customers to achieve end-to-end NVMe deployment - delivering higher throughput and up to a 50% reduction in latency.

The ThinkSystem SR860 V2 server also features GPU support (four double-wide 300 W or eight single-wide GPUs) and new GPU-rich configurations. Use cases can include powering virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployments, data analytics and artificial intelligence workloads.

A remote deployment service for the Lenovo ThinkSystem DM7100 was also launched at the time, offering up to 80% faster implementation compared to scheduling onsite deployments.
