IOH's #LebihBaikIndosat commitment holds, absorbs 20% data traffic surge with ease
Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison's (IOH's) data traffic has once again proved the reliability of its network during the 2026 Eid Al-Fitr homecoming season (mudik) soared more than 20% year-on-year, surpassing the 40% national traffic surge projection released by the Indonesia Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi).
This feat was backed by significant infrastructure investment. Over 7,000 site capacity upgrades and more than 1,600 new sites have been built since April 2025. The focus was clear: homecoming routes, rest areas, stations, and tourist destinations, where millions converged and demanded the best possible connectivity.
As an AI-TechCo, IOH harnesses AI to monitor network traffic in real-time, anticipate surges before they happen, and automatically optimises network capacity. This approach enabled Indosat's 4G and 5G networks to operate in synergy, with 4G maintaining a stable service baseline while 5G absorbed traffic surges at critical points.
The telco optimised its AI-powered network across 77 homecoming routes, covering 36 toll roads, 31 non-toll roads, and 10 railway lines. The enhancements spanned ~8,121 km in total, along with 797 strategic points of interest (POIs). More than 75 mobile BTS (MBTS) units were also deployed along the homecoming routes, and some 2,500 engineers were on 24x7 standby at 46 branch offices and 16 emergency posts from Sabang to Merauke.
The result: 55,000 active sites across more than 420 regencies, serving millions of travellers without a hitch, proof that #LebihBaikIndosat is not just a promise, but a commitment felt by subscribers across Indonesia.
IOH's network remained reliable and stable throughout the mudik period, with the peak surge radiating from Jakarta toward West Java (more than 22%) and Central Java (more than 37%). The applications recording the highest surge in activity include WhatsApp, TikTok and YouTube.
IOH's AI system identified potential traffic congestion up to more than 60% faster, enabling proactive network capacity adjustments at 77 strategic points throughout this homecoming season. This led to downtime decreasing by 20% during the 2026 Eid period compared to the same time in 2025.
Desmond Cheung, Director and CTO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison said: "The Eid Al-Fitr homecoming season and return journey is the ultimate test of our network resilience. We are grateful for the trust of more than 14 million customers who relied on Indosat’s network during this important mudik period. This achievement reflects our continued efforts in strengthening network quality and reliability across Indonesia, as part of our transformation into an AI-TechCo.”
Cheung added that IOH will continue to invest in strengthening network quality and reliability across Indonesia.
The news follows IOH successfully breaking a Museum Rekor-Dunia Indonesia (MURI) record with an uninterrupted 11-hour TikTok livestream along the Jakarta–Yogyakarta homecoming route.
