Getting your cloud strategy right

By Justin Loh, Singapore Country Director, Veritas

You have heard this story before and probably even experienced it – in today’s data-driven marketplace, the mix of traditional and modern IT systems, coupled with mounting expectations from end users, governments, and regulatory bodies, necessitate the effective management of data.

The solution? Migration to the cloud.

Indeed, as cloud-based capabilities improve, businesses are moving more data and workloads to the cloud and taking advantage of cloud-hosted solutions to equip themselves with the visibility and agility to manage soaring volumes of data. In fact, the Veritas Truth in Cloud 2019 Report found that nearly 50% of organisations surveyed have almost half of their infrastructure in the cloud, with 77% sharing their desired end state is running most or all applications on public cloud infrastructure.

While hybrid and multicloud solutions could be the holy grail to data management woes, the successful implementation of which will determine whether cloud adoption benefits your business or becomes an impediment to functionality.

In the Veritas Data Management Playbook – and in the spirit of effective data management – we cut through the maze to empower businesses to get their cloud strategy right.

Your business needs better than basic

Cloud providers frequently provide a basic, one-size-fits-all backup to calm the nerves of administrators and business leaders. These solutions are typically not built for longevity or scale—or really anything beyond the provider’s platform. Simply put, they will not support the complete backup requirements of the modern enterprise.

Backup is only part of the equation

Availability and recovery are equally as important as backup, with each supporting an organisation’s ability to deliver consistent, reliable data-driven experiences. In our recent Truth in Cloud Report, we discovered a disparity between the data recoverability needs of cloud architects and administrators and their abilities. Although most respondents want to recover data at least 10 years old, only 13% can do so within the bounds of their current cloud solutions.

Know where your cloud data responsibility lies

Along with the ubiquitous nature of cloud, we’ve witnessed increasing reliance on cloud native data protection. Cloud adoption is growing and will continue to grow rapidly, as companies look for agility, flexibility and cost savings. However, moving to the cloud is not a silver bullet. Data must still be protected but this is easier said than done.

More than 80% of cloud users operate under the false assumption that data protection is the cloud service provider's (CSP's) responsibility and their CSP is already backing up their data. But they’re wrong. Put in another way: A majority of those responsible for maintaining cloud-based data remain uncertain about who is liable for its integrity and recovery.

The best practice: A hybrid platform approach

The best practice accounts for where your organisation is today. The reality—the market is hybrid and it’s likely your IT system is, too. A hybrid platform approach allows your systems administrators to harness the power of the full gamut of IT technologies while addressing the complexity presented by a mess of single-solution point products.

Today, to meet users’ expectations and commitments, businesses demand a trusted and highly reliable solution with near zero tolerance for downtime. At Veritas, we believe availability, protection and recovery of critical systems is best achieved with a platform approach—one that works across physical, virtual and cloud; one able to effectively meet the needs of your current and future business, meeting growth with scalability.
