ESET, a global cybersecurity solutions provider and developer of cybersecurity software, has launched a series of free e-books on data protection for businesses. The six-issue series, developed by ESET security experts, emphasises the importance of data protection in small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

“While recent cybersecurity breaches have involved large enterprises and sensitive data, cyberattacks and breaches involving SMBs are no less frequent and damaging. Given the relatively number of SMBs and their limited financial and security resources compared to larger enterprises, the impact of a cyberattack or data breach on an SMB’s customers – as well as the viability of the SMB itself – can be more damaging,” said Parvinder Walia, ESET Sales and Marketing Director for Asia Pacific and Japan.

Increasingly, organisations, especially SMBs, are implementing new technology to overcome key challenges, unlock new avenues of growth, and scale rapidly when required. As digital transformation progresses, however, cybercrime has become today’s fastest-growing form of criminal activity, said ESET. According to ESET more than 875,000 SMBs were affected by a cyberattack last year, at a cost of more than US$13,000 for over a fifth of those businesses, and more than US$69,000 for one in ten. The average cost of a data breach for large enterprises is approximately US$3.62 million.

The free ESET e-books on data protection aim to educate readers on the importance of data protection and how businesses can take the necessary steps to secure themselves. As a talent shortage has been cited as one of the top challenges for digital transformation within the region, the content also delves into the assessment of data security risks and key steps towards effective data protection for various-sized organisations. The e-books also cover regulations on information security and data protection.

“Digital transformation is no longer just a vision for businesses. It is a reality. IDC also reported that more than 60% of SMBs in Asia-Pacific have already started to embrace digitalisation. While some organisations may not have the financial capability to invest in robust cybersecurity solutions, we hope that the ESET e-book gives them a perspective on how they can get started on their own, with minimal investment. At the end of the day, cybersecurity education is as important as the cybersecurity solution that is used,” added Walia.
